Loreto between tradition, legend and ... Holy Scriptures
SANCTUARY AT THE CENTER OF THE MARCHE.
These are difficult days. Everyone lives them as he can: closed at home to grind news and special anxiety, or dragging himself to work with fear always on him like a heavy blanket. It was during one of these news that I saw the images of the Italian squares: empty, immobile and silent enough to remember the metaphysical squares of Giorgio de Chirico's painting . But more than the others, the square of the Madonna di Loreto calls my attention, because if all the Italian squares were to be crowded, that of Loreto had to be even more crowded. In fact, the 100th anniversary of the Proclamation - which took place on March 24, 1920 - of the Blessed Virgin as universal patroness of the Air Force and of all the aviators occurs. It is clear that on this occasion a pilgrimage was planned which the coronavirus, however, had to postpone.
Seeing those images, my thoughts go back to December 8, 2019 when I was in Loreto to attend the inauguration of the Holy Year.
The visit of the Holy House of Mary inside the Basilica is always full of emotions for me as it is a very suggestive place, but now I want to tell something new.
Unless you are from Loreto or the surrounding area , I challenge you to answer this question: do you know what the Fires of Coming are ? I give you a little help: it is an ancient tradition, or rather something with a deeply religious flavor that has to do with the Holy House of Mary.
On the night of 9 December, fires and bonfires are lit in the countryside around Loreto and all the bells of the parishes ring in celebration, while the prayer vigil is held in Piazza della Madonna . The climax is at 3 am. According to legend, this is the time, in fact, in the night between 9 and 10 December 1294 the Holy House of Nazareth was transported by angels to Loreto: the light from the bonfires guided their way to the hill where it still stands today .
It is, therefore, common practice at this time to put lights out of the windows in memory of the "coming", while in the "fogarò" or "fogaroni" men light fireworks, with women intent on offering wine and meat to those present on the grill, reciting the Holy Rosary and singing the Lauretan litanies.
These are the images that accompany me when I think of Loreto: the flashes diffused in the countryside that create a mystical atmosphere, but also of ancient flavor, of when the countryside was illuminated only by the moonlight, lanterns and some bonfires.
And as far as the transport of the Holy House is concerned, I suggest you read the two versions, the more mystical one with the Angels as protagonists and the more realistic one with men and ships, and choose the one that best suits your nature. The conclusion is that however the House of Mary is located inside the basilica, historians confirm this, and at the end of this period, which will have an end, will certainly see the visit of many of us.
