The Caves of Frasassi Tesoro in the Marche

The first time I was there as a child following my parents and among the many memories one was still very clear in my mind: the emotion felt during the visit . I really liked the Frasassi Caves a lot, so much so that when it came to going back I was almost afraid of being disappointed.

In reality it had not been like this at all: even after more than thirty years they had turned out to be wonderful just like when I was a child, a sign that it was not the childhood fantasy that amplified their beauty!

We are in the Marche region , in the territory of Genga , in the province of Ancona , only one hour from Fano . A treasure is hidden in these mountains : extraordinary rooms created over millennia, an environment that seems to have come out of the imagination of Giulio Verne. Inside you are surrounded by silence and wonders of nature. A forest of immense natural sculptures that seem not to obey the laws of gravity, placed inside gigantic rooms, one of which, the great wind cave , could contain the cathedral of Milan. It was the water that, over time, created this fairytale landscape that lies beneath our feet. What strikes me, entering these environments, is their color, all white, because they are built from filtered water, therefore synonymous with absolute purity. Furthermore, I like to listen to the extraordinary melody of the drops that come from above and that build those works that surround the visitor which are the stalactites and the stalagmites. It's amazing to think that we know some areas of the moon or Mars better and less of what we have underground . But a few days ago the news of the discovery of a new room, the cave of the white deer , and it is likely that this is only the first of a series of caves that, 50 years after the discovery of the first, have been found and that will be explored to see if they will be made accessible to the public or only to experienced cavers . In the meantime, we have the opportunity to visit the open ones, even in this period.

The "classic" walk in the caves lasts about an hour and is accessible to everyone, with a constant temperature of 14 degrees all year round and some slopes and steps. If you go there with the children, remember a pair of comfortable shoes - it is still a humid environment and at times a little slippery - and a sweatshirt especially during the summer months when the change in temperature with respect to the outside is felt.
These are my tips for visiting the caves , which in addition to the show they offer, represent something that tells our past, the result of a very slow work that allows us to understand a world that no longer exists.
