An architectural masterpiece

The temple, designed by the architect Giuseppe Valadier in 1819 commissioned by Pope Pius VII, is an emblematic example of neoclassical taste. Its structure, inspired by Greek temples, features a hexastyle pronaos of the Doric order, surmounted by a triangular tympanum. Inside, the environment is dominated by a large statue of Venus, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original.

A place of worship and memory

The Temple of Valadier was erected in memory of the young Matilda Bonaparte, niece of Napoleon and wife of Prince Demidoff, who died prematurely in 1820. Her premature death inspired Valadier to create a funerary monument of great beauty and charm, which fits perfectly in the surrounding natural context.
